Potassium chloride (KCl) is an alkali metal halide composed of potassium and chlorine. In its pure form, it is odorless, white or colorless crystals. It is widely used in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, and chemical industry. The naturally occurring mineral is sylvite, and when mixed with sodium chloride, it forms sylvinite.
Areas of Application
- Potassium chloride is used mostly as fertilizer [7], as the amount of potassium in the soil greatly influences the growth rate of plants.
- The chemical industry also uses KCl in large quantities, primarily for producing potassium hydroxide [8] and potassium.
- It is also applied in the pharmaceutical industry.
