It is a colorless, odorless, crystalline compound with the strongest salty taste known. It has an ionic lattice structure, forming a face-centered cubic crystal system in its solid state. The lattice is composed of positive sodium (Na⁺) and negative chloride (Cl⁻) ions, held together by a strong electrostatic attraction — the ionic bond.
It is an important chemical raw material, as most sodium and chloride compounds are produced from sodium chloride.
Common salt is the only flavoring substance of mineral origin that is used not only to season food but also to preserve it.
