Urea can be considered the diamide of carbonic acid. Its chemical formula is CO(NH₂)₂. It is a colorless, crystalline compound that crystallizes in prisms. Urea is highly soluble in water and alcohol.
It is the end product of protein metabolism in mammals. Urea is used in the production of nitrogen fertilizers. The pharmaceutical industry uses it for the manufacture of barbiturates and other ureides. It is also used in the production of plastics, including aminoplasts.
