Copper(II) SulfateCopper(II) Sulfate

Copper sulfate (also known as copper(II) sulfate, blue vitriol, INN: copper sulfate) is one of the most common copper compounds. It can be formally derived from the reaction of copper(II) oxide and sulfuric acid. Its mineralogical name is chalcanthite.

The pentahydrate form (CuSO₄·5H₂O) forms blue, odorless crystals (historically called blue vitriol), while the anhydrous form is chemically pure white powder; the technical grade appears grayish-white or pale green depending on impurities. The anhydrous form turns blue again upon absorbing water.

Applications:
It is used for metal galvanization, as a pesticide (fungicide), and the anhydrous form can be used for water detection (e.g., in absolute alcohol). Copper sulfate is also used in the chemical industry, fertilizer production, leather and textile industries, and is present in some cosmetic products.
