Acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid, is an organic compound with the formula CH3COOH. It is easily recognizable as it gives vinegar its sour taste and pungent smell. Pure, anhydrous acetic acid is a colorless liquid that absorbs water from its surroundings, solidifies below 16.7 °C, and forms colorless crystals.
It is an important chemical reagent and industrial raw material. It is mainly used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (bottles for carbonated drinks), cellulose acetate (photographic film), polyvinyl acetate (glue), as well as artificial fibers (acetate fibers). In the textile industry, it is used as a finishing aid (e.g., for pH adjustment).
In households, the more concentrated version of vinegar is used for cleaning purposes as a descaler and mild disinfectant, while the more diluted form is used as a food flavoring agent and, when consumed, as a medicinal preparation.
