Ammonium hydroxide (also known as ammonium spirit, ammoniacal water, or E527) refers to ammonia dissolved in water. Technically, the name is not entirely accurate because such a compound cannot be isolated, yet it describes the behavior of ammonia in water, which is why the term is still in use. For chemical equation calculations or reactions with other compounds, it is practical to calculate using the non-isolable NH4OH + H2O instead of NH3 + H2O.
