It is used in the production of other barium compounds. In the ceramics industry, it is used for producing highly refractive enamels, and in the glass industry for manufacturing highly refractive glass. It is also used in fireworks, as it colors the flame green. In the past, it was used for exterminating mice and rats, as well as a catalyst in cementation processes.
